Did you make a resolution to drop a few pounds in 2018?   Or are you thinking about summer, swim suits, shorts and want to just drop the few pounds you gained over the holidays?   Are there some “habits” you can adopt to help you take off some weight without going on a crazy diet?   Just listening at the gym, one hears all kinds of myths and crazy diets people go on to lose weight.   Many of these diets result in you losing more nutrients than pounds.   Many people are trying the Whole30 diet and then surprised to hear that the U.S. News & World Report has ranked it as one of the worse diets to be on in 2018.   In fact, the experts ranking the diets tied the Whole30 diet with the Raw Food Diet “ as the worst of the worst for healthy eating. ”   Probably because the diet bans grains, dairy grains and beans so you are cutting out important nutrients like calcium and vitamin D from your day.   Probably a good thing it is only a 30 day diet and no...

What are the worst breakfast foods and habits for your waistline?   MSN lists 37 of them in their article 37 Worst Breakfast Habits for Your Waistline .   We won’t review all 37 but let’s review some of them and add some other ideas for a healthy breakfast.   In the article they mentioned a book that actually focuses on breakfasts and belly fat, called Zero Belly Breakfasts .        1.    Eat Breakfast – so many people skip breakfast thinking that is a good way to cut calories.   But then by 10 AM they are hitting the snack machines because they are hungry.   So eat breakfast every day.   The National Weight Control Registry   notes that 78% of people who lost weight and kept it off, ate breakfast every day.     2.    Focus on Protein – To lose weight and keep it off, a lot of research has shown that adding protein to your breakfast can help keep weight off.   Why?   Because protein has “sta...

Add Some Yogurt to Your Day

Why is yogurt so healthy? Protein – yogurt is not only a good source of protein, the protein in yogurt is a high-quality protein.   Eating protein at meals helps you feel full longer as protein has “staying power” and takes longer to digest than carbs.   This may be the reason that yogurt helps keep off the weight.   Greek yogurt is higher in protein than regular yogurt but often has less calcium. Probiotics – a huge, benefit of yogurt is the probiotics.   The “friendly bacteria” in yogurt that seems to have so many health benefits.   Look on the label for “live” active cultures when buying yogurt. Pack a healthy lunch for kids

School has started in many areas or will be soon.   So many moms and dads will be packing a lunch for their kids.   On school lunch duty, I observed a lot of kid’s lunches.   One girl opened her lunch to a sandwich always cut into a shape, a heart one day, a diamond the next.   She always had 2 servings of fruits or vegetables in her lunch.   She bought milk and had quite a healthy lunch every day.   Another student had braces.   His mom packed him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day.   And every day he threw away the sandwich, not even one bite taken.   I asked him why and he said he didn’t want the peanut butter to get stuck in his braces.   But he never told his mom this.   So, every day she packed the peanut butter and jelly sandwich and every day he threw it away.   The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at eatright.org has some good suggestions for parents when packing that school lunch.
